How Did I Get Here?Kurt Rawlins bio

My first memory of weightlifting was way back when I was about 5 years old. My dad had a set of 12 lb. dumbbells he would use to do bicep curls in the living room. (I thought my Dad was ripped, but 12 lbs. is pathetic for a fully grown man. Come on Dad!) I, unfortunately, couldn’t lift those dumbbells back then (thanks for the freaky genetics Dad).

Well, I grew up and by the 8th grade I was fairly athletic, but completely scrawny. I couldn’t do one pull-up, and my body looked like a toothpick. I could run a mile in six minutes, but I had virtually no strength. And that bothered me. It was at this point my Dad who could curl 12 lbs. introduced me to the bench press in the basement. I knew that if I lifted weights, I had a good chance of changing my physique. And I was right.

It didn’t happen instantly, but sure enough I started bench pressing my body weight, and once I began playing high school football, my entire dedication to weightlifting went to another level.

Now, I was benching, squatting, deadlifting, and power cleaning. And I absolutely loved it. I loved the powerful feeling it gave me. I loved the endorphin rush at the end of the workout. I loved the way it changed my physique.

But what I really loved was the dramatic impact it had on my self-confidence. Girls began to notice me a little bit more. I began to walk a little taller through the hallways. I felt good about the hard work I had put in, and the awesome benefits I had reaped.

I knew fitness would become a large part of my life forever.

I wasn’t born with great genetics. I had to work for it. I know precisely what combination of exercise, diet, and recovery it takes to functionally strengthen and sculpt a body. I’ve done it to myself over the years, and am continuing to do it today. I have dedicated my life to my passion: fitness.
